Start here

Do this

  • Count your full-time months from your 482 grant
  • Book your English test early
  • Keep payslips and contracts in one place
  • Check your age against the nomination date

Avoid this

  • Taking long unpaid leave without checking the count
  • Assuming your old English result is still valid
  • Changing role duties without telling us
  • Leaving it until just before 45

What a wrong turn can cost: Missing the age limit or an English score by weeks can close this pathway completely.

Are you on the right track?

  1. Will you have 2 years full-time on your 482 by the nomination date?
  2. Will you be under 45 then?
  3. Do you have Competent English, or a test booked?

Unsure about any of these? Talk it through on a free call — you're not alone in this.

Is this you?

  • You're on a 482 and coming up to 2 years full-time.
  • You have 3+ years' experience and an employer who wants to keep you.
  • You're getting close to 45.

What changed

Since Nov 2023 TRT needs 2 years full-time (reduced from 3).

1 Jul 2026 Salary floor A$79,423; visa charge A$6,140.

19 Sep 2026 Priority sectors and onshore applicants are processed first.

Who qualifies

  • TRT: 2 years full-time on a 482 (or 457) in your occupation; a skills assessment generally isn't needed.
  • Direct Entry: an eligible occupation, a positive skills assessment and 3 years' experience; no general age exemptions.
  • Both: Competent English, and salary of at least A$79,423 and the market rate.
  • 491 and 494 holders generally need 3 years on that visa first.
