Victoria 2026–27 · updated 13 October 2026

Victoria's new points test, explained and calculated.

Victoria now ranks every 190 and 491 registration with a published Victorian Points Test, and charges new fees. See your estimated score in about two minutes, then understand exactly how invitations work.

  • 950maximum VPT points across seven factors
  • No pass markthe highest totals in each round are invited
  • A$66 + A$198ROI fee, then nomination fee only if invited (incl. GST)

What's your VPT?

Seven quick steps. Your total builds as you go.

Not open yet. Victoria says the 2026–27 program will open soon for Registrations of Interest (ROIs). Eligibility criteria and further details will be published when it opens.

Old registrations don't carry over. If you registered in an earlier year, you'll need to submit a new ROI when the program opens.

The VPT uses information from your SkillSelect EOI and your Victorian ROI — so keep them consistent.

How the Victorian system works, step by step

From your first Home Affairs check to the visa. Steps 3 to 7 are run by Victoria.

  1. 1Home AffairsMeet the basics

An eligible occupation, a skills assessment and at least 65 points on the Australian points test.

  2. 2Home AffairsLodge your SkillSelect EOI

Choose Victoria for the 190 or 491. Victoria uses information from this EOI in your VPT.

  3. 3VictoriaSubmit a Victorian ROI

When the 2026–27 program opens. A$60, or A$66 with GST if you're in Australia.

  4. 4VictoriaVictoria scores your VPT

Seven factors from your EOI and ROI, out of 950.

  5. 5RankingYou join the pool

Ranked highest to lowest — in the most competitive route, and within your priority industry if you have one.

  6. 6RankingInvitation rounds

In each round the highest totals are invited. There is no pass mark.

  7. 7NominationApply for nomination

Only if invited: A$180, or A$198 with GST.

  8. 8VisaApply for the visa

Once nominated, you apply to Home Affairs for the 190 or 491.

How each factor is scored

Seven factors, added together for a total out of 950. Your score comes from what you put in your EOI and ROI — so keep them consistent and backed by documents.

Age

up to 300

Full 300 points from 20 to 29, then fewer each year — 210 at 35 and 16 at 44.

Tip: Register as soon as the program opens — your points fall each birthday after 29.

English

up to 200

Competent 0 · Proficient 100 · Superior 200.

Tip: The easiest factor to improve. One better test result can add 100 or 200.

Experience in your nominated occupation

up to 100

0 years 0 · 1 year 20 · 1–3 years 40 · 3–5 years 60 · 6–8 years 80 · More than 8 years 100.

Tip: Count only experience in your nominated occupation. If you sit on a band edge, ask us.

Education

up to 100

Other 25 · Bachelors and Honours 50 · Masters 75 · PhD 100.

Tip: Your highest qualification counts.

Occupation skill level

up to 50

Skill level 1 occupations get 50; skill levels 2 and 3 get 0.

Tip: Check your occupation on the Home Affairs skilled occupation list.

Partner's skill

up to 50

Only if you claimed 10 Partner Skills points in your EOI, your partner is included, and their occupation is a priority occupation.

Tip: All three conditions must apply. Single applicants and Australian partners score 0.

Earnings in Victoria

up to 150

From A$80,000 (8 points) up to A$170,000 and over (150).

Tip: Only current skilled employment in Victoria counts — not work in other states or overseas.

Six situations, worked through

  • GST (10%) applies only if you're in Australia when you pay.
  • The nomination fee is paid only if you're invited and submit a nomination application.
  • The ROI fee is charged once per program year — withdrawing and resubmitting in the same year isn't charged again.

How invitations work

Every registration is ranked from highest to lowest VPT total. There are two ways to be invited, and you're considered for both automatically.

1. Most competitive

In each round, the highest VPT totals across all eligible occupations in the pool are invited.

2. Priority industry

In each round, the highest totals within each priority industry or subgroup are also invited.

  • No fixed pass mark — outcomes depend on how competitive the pool is in each round.
  • 65 points still needed on the Home Affairs points test to be eligible for the visa.
  • No predictions — Victoria won't say how likely you are to be invited or how you compare.
  • No personal priority — age, an expiring visa or expiring documents don't move you up.
  • You must meet both the Home Affairs visa requirements and Victoria's nomination requirements.

The seven factors

Victoria says the VPT favours younger, highly qualified applicants with higher English.

Start here

Do this

  • Get your SkillSelect EOI ready — the VPT uses it alongside your ROI
  • Check your occupation's skill level on the Home Affairs list
  • Improve your English if you can: Proficient adds 100, Superior adds 200
  • Submit a new ROI as soon as the 2026–27 program opens

Avoid this

  • Relying on last year's ROI
  • Assuming a high VPT guarantees an invitation
  • Counting partner points unless all three conditions apply
  • Counting earnings that aren't from current skilled work in Victoria

Questions people ask

Is the 2026–27 Victorian program open?

Victoria says the 2026–27 program will open soon for Registrations of Interest (ROIs). Eligibility criteria and further details will be published when it opens.

Is there a pass mark?

No. Invitations go to the registrations with the highest VPT totals in each round, so your rank depends on who else is in the pool at the time.

Do I still need 65 points?

Yes. The Australian Government still requires at least 65 points on its own points test. The VPT is only used to rank Victorian registrations.

I registered last year. Is my ROI still valid?

No. If you submitted an ROI in a previous program year, you need to log in and submit a new one when the 2026–27 program opens.

How much does it cost?

A$60 for the ROI (A$66 with GST) and A$180 for a 190 or 491 nomination application (A$198 with GST). GST applies only if you're in Australia when you pay, and the nomination fee is only paid if you're invited and apply.

Can Victoria tell me my chances?

No. Victoria says it can't tell you how likely you are to be invited or how your points compare with others.

Will my age or expiring visa get me priority?

No. Victoria doesn't prioritise invitations for personal circumstances such as age or an expiring visa or document.

Do I need a priority occupation?

No. All eligible occupations can register. Priority occupations get an extra route: they are also ranked within their priority industry.
